TRIGGER WARNING: minimization/mention of rape

Oh hey, it’s really COOL and PUNK to name your punk house the “Joe Paterno Rape Crisis Center.” (Apparently such a place exists in Philly.)

Punk was where I went to be fucking safe as a survivor. It was where my anger felt legitimate, where I could talk about difficult things if I wanted to, where I could just be around other people who understood.

But there were also always pieces of shit who thought it was cool and EDGY to make jokes like this at the expense of survivors (if there are survivors running this place, I’d be really, really surprised), as if this isn’t the same kind of joke that whatever frat bro/Daniel Tosh type would make. You’re not being edgy or “punk” when you’re propping up a fucked-up system.

As I/others have said before, if the noose isn’t around your neck, don’t fucking talk to me about gallows humor.

It’s not “creative,” “funny,” “edgy” or “interesting” to belittle rape/sexual assault in this way. Sick and tired of white “punk” boys & their ignorance.

Also, why the hell is Slutever even playing this? Thought they would at least try a little harder to look like they cared about shit.

This show was submitted to DIY PHL to be listed on our show calendar (www.diyphl.com) and when we gave a more-polite-than-necessary response about why we would be not be listing the show (because I wasn’t sure if a band on the bill submitted it, the show promoter, or who), we were given this shitty, sarcastic response:

“Thank you, through your moral superiority you have shown me the light. I’ve apologized to the touring bands for creating such an unsafe, hateful environment for them and i’ve called the show off. Thank you for keeping rock music pure and safe from people like me.”

They then proceeded to resubmit the show using our submit form but listed it as being at “Venue Name - The Safe Place”

with band descriptions like: “generic, inoffensive music,” “a band that will neither offend nor entertain,” and “for the docile and sensitive crowd”

cool, bro.
